Best for: Households or small offices standardising on Matter and Thread that want automations to keep running during an internet outage — and that have no Z-Wave devices to carry over.
The Hub M3 is the product that stops an Aqara system from being an Aqara-only system. It puts a Zigbee 3.0 radio, a Thread border router and a Matter controller in one box, takes power over Ethernet or USB-C, and adds a 360-degree infrared blaster for air conditioners and other remote-controlled hardware.
The part worth paying for is local execution. The M3 holds automations in 8 GB of encrypted local storage and keeps running them when the internet drops — the difference between a smart home and a home that stops working when the router does. Through 2026 the review consensus settled on it as the cleanest Matter and Thread hub under $200, and as the first Aqara hub worth recommending to people who do not otherwise buy Aqara.
Aqara lists it at $159.99, up from a $129.99 launch price, as researched in August 2026. The one specification to check before ordering is the radio list: there is no Z-Wave. If you are retrofitting a home that already has Z-Wave sensors or switches, the M3 cannot see them, and that omission was the main complaint in otherwise positive coverage.
Not tested hands-on. Compiled from the vendor's published specifications and the 2026 review coverage cited above, researched August 2026 and not re-verified since — check Aqara's current price before buying. There is no Digital4All score on this listing: our scores mean hands-on testing, and we will not imply testing we have not done.
