Best for: People who want to own their smart home outright — local control, no vendor cloud — and who genuinely enjoy configuring it. It is not a plug-and-play hub, and it is not trying to be.

Home Assistant Green is the appliance version of Home Assistant: the open-source, local-first automation platform, pre-installed on a small fanless box that you plug into your router and power. It is the least painful way to run a system with roughly 3,000 integrations without first learning to provision a Raspberry Pi.

The price is $199 / €179 MSRP, confirmed on home-assistant.io in September 2026. That number has moved a long way: the Green launched at $99 in 2023, went to $169 in January 2026 and to $199 in April 2026, with Nabu Casa citing component costs that had nearly doubled. Anyone working from an older buying guide will be quoting a price that no longer exists.

Two things are worth being blunt about before you buy. The Green is a bare box: Zigbee and Thread devices need the separate Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 adapter. Nabu Casa is careful to say the adapter is not strictly required, because plenty of devices and hubs are reachable over the network, but it is what makes the Green a single Zigbee/Thread hub rather than a coordinator for things you already own. And Home Assistant is a platform for people who enjoy configuring things — YAML in the corners, a monthly release cadence that occasionally breaks an integration, and a community forum in place of a support desk. For the right owner that is the entire appeal. For everyone else it is a bad purchase at any price.

Not tested hands-on. Compiled from the vendor's published specifications and the 2026 review coverage cited above, researched August 2026, with pricing and the adapter details re-checked against home-assistant.io in September 2026. There is no Digital4All score on this listing: our scores mean hands-on testing, and we will not imply testing we have not done.
