The TP-Link Tapo P125M is a compact 15A Matter-certified Wi-Fi smart plug that works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings without a hub. It is the cheapest well-reviewed Matter plug and the device most people buy to test an ecosystem. The one thing to know: it has no energy monitoring.

Which Tapo plug should you buy?

  • Pricing: about $19.99 list, $11.99 on the Tapo store; 3-packs around $35, per the listing's pricing line.
  • Matter means one plug works across platforms; 2.4GHz Wi-Fi only.
  • For energy monitoring, the Tapo P115 and P110 have it but are Wi-Fi-only, not Matter.
  • Small enough not to block the second socket.

The Shelly 1PM Gen4 is the in-wall alternative for anyone comfortable with wiring. It appears in our office tech kit for a 10-person office; browse home automation.

Who should skip it

Anyone who wants to measure consumption should buy the P115 instead. Anyone on a 5GHz-only network needs to enable a 2.4GHz band.
